Understanding hazard reduction and home hardening

What is hazard reduction?

Hazard reduction involves moving flammable items away from your dwelling unit and/or removing them from your property. Examples include removing pine needles and leaf litter from roof and around dwelling, removing dead trees or tree limbs, removing flammable items from under decks and porches, etc.

What is home hardening?

Home hardening is replacing combustible materials with noncombustible materials on your home. Examples include installing screening on vents, adding fire-resistant siding, replacement of wood fencing attached to the house with non-combustible materials, replacing missing shingles or fully replacing roof, etc.

Why are hazard reduction and home hardening important?

When considering your home’s “ignition risk,” it can be helpful to think about the area around your home, or “home ignition zone.” This includes your home at the center and everything within 100 feet (or 30 meters). A home’s ignition risk is determined by its immediate surroundings and the materials used for its construction. Conducting hazard reduction and home hardening reduces the ignition risk.
